icoone® during pregnancy: What is possible, and what is not

Reading time: 6 Min.

During pregnancy, the body changes significantly. Heavy legs, fluid retention, tight skin on the belly, breasts and hips, and often the feeling that you are not “allowed to do anything” aesthetically. That is not true in general terms: icoone® microstimulation can, under clear conditions, also be used during pregnancy. What it can achieve then, where it is not used, and when you should leave it alone.

Why icoone® in pregnancy is relevant at all

The manufacturer i-Tech Industries explicitly promotes icoone® for pregnancy and the postpartum period, focusing on typical complaints such as heavy legs, fluid retention, capillary fragility, skin elasticity and stretch mark prevention (icoone.com/en/treatments-aesthetic-body/pregnancy). The basis is Roboderm® technology, which activates tissue through gentle vacuum and three-dimensional microstimulation, without heat, cold or needles. Details on how it works are in the icoone® pillar article.

Important: Approval as a medical device does not replace individual clinical clearance. Every pregnancy is different, and clearance by the gynaecologist or midwife precedes every treatment decision.

What icoone® can do during pregnancy

Drainage and circulation. Probably the most common indication. Especially in the second and third trimester, higher blood volume, hormonal influences and the growing weight of the uterus lead to fluid retention in legs and ankles. The rhythmic vacuum stimulation works along the lymphatic flow and can help decongest tissue. The result: less heavy legs, often better sleep.

Skin elasticity and stretch mark prevention. Stretch marks form when connective tissue tears under rapid stretching. Whether they occur at all is largely genetic, so prevention is only partly possible. Mechanical stimulation can support dermal microcirculation and the collagen and elastin turnover; this is documented for the general principle of mechanical skin stimulation (Humbert et al., Clinical Interventions in Aging 2015, study with an LPG device). A guarantee against stretch marks cannot be promised.

Physical wellbeing. Gentle microstimulation is often perceived as pleasant, comparable to a lymphatic drainage, without pressure on the belly. In a phase of significant physical change, this alone often brings relief.

From when, and with what clearance

On the official pregnancy page, the manufacturer i-Tech Industries does not specify a precise week of pregnancy as a minimum limit. It refers to individual adjustment and consultation with the healthcare professional. For non-invasive wellness and drainage treatments during pregnancy, the general recommendations of the Swiss Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (SGGG) and the Swiss Midwives Association (SHV) apply in Switzerland: consultation with the gynaecologist or midwife before every treatment, particular caution in the first trimester, and, from the second trimester onward, usually possible.

Before the first session:

  • Consultation with the gynaecologist or midwife
  • Thorough intake at the practice: week of pregnancy, prior conditions, previous pregnancies, current complaints
  • In high-risk pregnancy: medical clearance is mandatory, not just recommended

Which zones are treated, which are not

Can be treated:

  • Legs and feet (drainage, heavy legs)
  • Outer and side thighs (stretch marks, skin elasticity)
  • Upper arms
  • Back (tension, skin care)

Not treated:

  • Abdomen. Off limits throughout the entire pregnancy.
  • Chest area directly over the breast (caution principle; also not during lactation)
  • Groin and inner thighs above the knee (due to large vessels)

The exclusion of the abdomen is not negotiable. Neither cellulite goals on the flanks nor stretch mark treatment on the growing belly justify direct stimulation of the abdominal wall during pregnancy. That is what postpartum treatment is for, see postpartum recovery.

Contraindications

Absolute (no treatment):

  • Diagnosed high-risk pregnancy without medical clearance
  • Vaginal bleeding, preterm contractions, placenta praevia
  • Thrombosis or suspected thrombosis (including varicose veins with complications)
  • Pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, pregnancy hypertension
  • Acute infections, high fever
  • Skin alterations in the treatment area (rash, open lesions)

Relative (only after medical consultation):

  • Previous miscarriages
  • Gestational diabetes with complications
  • Marked varicose veins without complications
  • Multiple pregnancies

What icoone® cannot, and should not do

Honest distinction is part of it:

  • No cellulite programme during pregnancy. Tissue reacts differently due to hormones; cellulite reduction is not a realistic or appropriate treatment goal before birth.
  • No weight reduction. icoone® is not a fat reduction treatment. Mechanical microstimulation acts on skin, connective tissue and the lymphatic system, not on fat cells.
  • No guarantee against stretch marks. Preventive support yes, miracle solution no.

What is different in the Anzhelika Wyss practice

Anzhelika Wyss is an EMR-certified therapist and has access to one of the few official icoone® centres in Switzerland. During pregnancy, treatment is carried out in side position as a rule (from approximately week 20), with specialised cushions. The intake before the first session is thorough; if anything is unclear, treatment does not start without medical clearance.

Frequently asked questions

From which week of pregnancy is icoone® possible?

The manufacturer does not specify a precise week of pregnancy. In Swiss practice, caution is applied in the first trimester analogous to pregnancy massage; from the second trimester onward, treatment is generally possible after gynaecological or midwife clearance. In high-risk pregnancy, medical clearance is always required.

Can the abdomen be treated with icoone® during pregnancy?

No. The abdominal area is excluded from treatment throughout the entire pregnancy, also for stretch mark prevention. Abdominal treatment is possible at the earliest after wound healing is complete and medical clearance has been given postpartum.

Does icoone® help with heavy legs during pregnancy?

Microstimulation works along the lymphatic direction and can reduce fluid retention and heavy legs. This is one of the most common indications during pregnancy. Results are individual.

Is icoone® possible during breastfeeding?

Yes, in principle. The breast area itself is not treated. For the abdomen and body: after wound healing is complete and medical clearance has been given, according to SGGG and midwife recommendations typically 6 to 8 weeks after vaginal birth, 8 to 12 weeks after caesarean section. Details in the article on postpartum recovery.
